AI Fluency

Illustration: using an AI chat effectively, critically and safely

Knowing a few “good prompts” is not the same as knowing how to use AI. This 6-hour lecture helps you and your team build a tool-independent way of working with AI that is effective, efficient, ethical and safe. The approach stays useful whatever new models or products appear next.

The content is based on the AI Fluency Framework by Rick Dakan (Ringling College of Art and Design) and Joseph Feller (University College Cork), and on the open course they developed with Anthropic, AI Fluency: Framework and foundations.

The 4D framework

  • Delegation: decide which work suits AI, which should stay with people, and which AI tool to use.
  • Description: tell the AI clearly what result you want, how it should work, and what role it should take.
  • Discernment: critically evaluate the AI’s output, reasoning and behavior, and spot errors and bias.
  • Diligence: take responsibility for AI-assisted work and be transparent about it, internally and externally.

What you will learn

  • What AI Fluency means and why it matters for productivity and risk
  • The three ways of working with AI: Automation, Augmentation and Agency
  • How generative AI and large language models work, and their capabilities and limitations
  • Making sound delegation decisions based on problem, platform and task awareness
  • Describing requests at three levels (product, process and performance), plus core prompting techniques
  • Improving AI results step by step with the Description-Discernment loop
  • Practicing diligence in creation, transparency and deployment, and taking responsibility for AI-assisted work

Schedule (6 hours, including breaks)

  1. Introduction to AI Fluency and the 4D framework (45 min): why AI Fluency matters, three ways of working with AI, framework overview
  2. Generative AI fundamentals (45 min): how large language models work, what they can and cannot do
  3. Delegation (60 min): problem awareness, platform awareness, task delegation, with a project planning exercise
  4. Description (75 min): product, process and performance description, core prompting techniques with hands-on practice
  5. Discernment (60 min): evaluating output, process and behavior, the Description-Discernment loop in practice
  6. Diligence and wrap-up (45 min): responsibility in creation, transparency and deployment, summary and Q&A

Who it is for
