AI Agent Workflow Automation
Inquiries, orders, invoices, customer emails: many companies repeat the same processes every day. AI agents can already read emails and files, draft replies and organize data, but as long as AI is only used in a chat window, people still have to push every process forward. Workflow automation connects these scattered AI capabilities into business processes that run reliably: AI handles the routine work, and people only confirm at key points.
This 6-hour lecture is for business owners and managers. It involves no programming. The focus is on deciding which processes are worth automating, designing reliable workflows and introducing automation safely in your company. The hands-on exercises use PATH, the open-source workflow engine we develop.
Key elements of a reliable workflow
- Clear steps: break the process into steps, each with a clear input and output, completed by an AI agent, a software tool or a person.
- Routing rules: the result decides where the process goes next, for example to a manager for approval when an amount exceeds a limit.
- People in the loop: people confirm key decisions. The workflow pauses there and continues once the right person has acted.
- Pausable and resumable: after an interruption the process continues where it stopped, without redoing finished work.
What you will learn
- Identifying processes in your company that are worth automating, and weighing effort against benefit
- Telling apart three ways to automate: scheduled tasks, reusable AI skills and workflow tools, and knowing when to use which
- The basic concepts of workflows: steps, routing, executors, human steps and error handling
- Putting AI agents into a workflow: handling emails, files and messages, with human confirmation at key points
- Designing and running a business workflow in PATH, including resuming after an interruption and human approval
- Planning the rollout: choosing a pilot process, measuring results, assigning responsibility and keeping data protection (GDPR) in mind
Schedule (6 hours, including breaks)
- What is worth automating (45 min): spotting repetitive processes, separating rule-based work from work that needs judgment, weighing effort against benefit
- Three ways to automate (45 min): scheduled tasks, AI skills, workflow tools, comparing and choosing common tools
- Basic workflow concepts (60 min): steps, routing, executors, human steps, pausing and resuming, error handling
- AI agents as a workflow step (60 min): letting AI handle emails, files and messages, checking AI results, human confirmation at key points
- Hands-on with PATH (75 min): designing a real business process as a workflow, running, interrupting, resuming and approving it
- Rollout and wrap-up (45 min): choosing a pilot process, measuring results, permissions and responsibility, data protection, summary and Q&A
